BICYCLE SAFETY ESSAY AWARD CEREMONY
EVENT: Bicycle Safety Essay Award Ceremony

TIME: 11:00 AM (Note: winners will be assembled at 10:45 AM)

Members of the General Assembly have been invited-representing the winners districts: Senators Chris Radogno, Bill Brady, Dan Rutherford, Debbie Halvorson and Dan Kotowski. Representatives Jim Durkin, Dan Brady, Shane Cultra, Lisa Dugan, Keith Sommer, Carolyn Krause.
Teachers of the winners have been invited - 2 are attending. All winners and their families have confirmed their attendance.
BACKGROUND:
TREK Bicycle Corporation and the League of Illinois Bicyclists are sponsors of the contest. The essay contest was open to all Illinois students in fourth and fifth grades. Students were divided into two categories: 4th grade and 5th grade. Each school chose one winner in each category and submitted the essays to our office. A first place winner in each category as well as second and third place winners was chosen. Essay's were judged on creativity, originality, grammar and must include at least one bicycle safety element. Judges were staff from the SOS Traffic Safety Unit and the League of Illinois Bicyclists. The two first place winners will each receive a bicycle and helmet from TREK Bicycle Corporation, a personalized blue book, and a certificate from the Secretary. Second and third place winners will each receive a bicycle helmet from TREK, a personalized blue book and certificate from the Secretary. A copy of all the winning essays will be on display at the ceremony.
