Monthly Awards:

Rider of the Month – Awarded to the SBC member who has ridden and reported the most miles during the month.  Recipients are limited to winning the award only once during a calendar year.

The three monthly awards described below are voted on during the monthly Board meeting. SBC members can make a nomination at the board meeting, or they may give their nomination to any board member before the meeting.  All SBC members attending the board meeting are eligible to vote for the monthly awards.

Ride of the Month – Awarded to the SBC member who has lead the most interesting, adventurous, or even the best culinary event (with a ride involved).  Only weekend and holiday rides are considered.  Recipients are limited to winning the award only once during a calendar year.

Almost Anything Award – Fun award given monthly for any noteworthy reason, such as doing a good job, coming to the rescue, or promoting bicycling.

Lead Water Bottle Award – “All in Fun” award given monthly for any not-so-noteworthy reason, such as “fouling up”, being the victim of not-so-special circumstance, or just because.

Annual Awards:

Spinner Awards - Given annually to the male and female SBC members who rode and reported the most miles in each age group.  Age groups, determined by age at the end of the year, are:  0‑19, 20‑24, 25‑29, 30‑34, 35‑39, 40‑44, 45-49, 50‑54, 55-59, 60‑64, 65+.

There are also two “wild card” Spinner Awards, given to the highest mileage man and woman who did not place first in their age groups.  Awards are presented at the Spinner Awards ceremony in January.  A minimum of 500 miles is required to be eligible for a Spinner Award.

Thousand Mile Pins – Given annually to members who rode and reported at least 1,000 miles.  These awards are also presented at the Spinner Awards ceremony in January.

NoBell Award – Each year since 1982, the NoBell Award has been presented to an individual in recognition of significant contributions in promoting and supporting bicycling with the Springfield community.  A committee of the past five award recipients selects the winner from the nominations received from the Club membership.  The Award is presented at the Annual Holiday Party in December.

Ride Leader Incentive Awards – The goal of the Ride Leader Incentive program is to encourage members to volunteer to lead rides and to encourage new ride leaders. A drawing is held and awards are presented at the Holiday Party in December, based on the 12-month period from December 1st through November 30th.

Rides are assigned point values, with a total of 15 points necessary to qualify for the drawing.  The name of each eligible ride leader will be put in the hat only once, regardless of how many points the leader has accumulated.  Four winners will be drawn from eligible ride leaders, with each winner receiving a $50 gift certificate redeemable at the bike shop of his/her choice.

Each ride leader will receive the appropriate points when they sign up, whether or not the ride actually takes place. It is felt that by helping the club by volunteering to lead a ride, each leader is obligated to follow the rules, which include planning and scouting a route in anticipation of the ride. If the ride is cancelled due to weather, the leader still should be compensated for stepping forward. The only exception is if the ride leader recruits a substitute.

The substitute leader then earns the points, but only if the ride scheduler is informed of the change before or not later than one week following the ride.

Here is the point system. Note that true show-n-go rides have no point value, since they have no ride leaders:

2 points – rides that do not require a map or cue sheet.

3 points – rides that require a map or cue sheet.

Volunteer Incentive Awards – The goal of the Volunteer Incentive Program is to recognize and encourage volunteerism at SBC sponsored or endorsed events.   A drawing is held and awards are presented at the Holiday Party in December, based on volunteer hours worked  from December 1st through November 30th and reported to the Incentive Chair.

Eligible events are those for which SBC members are asked to volunteer by an individual designated by the Board for that event.  Board members may not report hours for duties related to their board position.

For every 5 hours volunteered and reported to the Incentive Chair, the member’s name is placed in the hat for a Holiday Party drawing of four $50 gift certificates, redeemable at the bike shop of the member’s choice.  A volunteer’s name can be drawn more than once.
