Yoga for Cyclists Class

Date/Time: December 18, 2021 | 3:00-4:30 PM
Location: FLOW Midwest Yoga & Meditation  |  1921 West Iles Ave., Springfield, IL

If you’ve ever stopped by BikeTek on Durkin Drive, you’ve probably met Nancy Thompson, Chief Movement Officer. Did you know that Nancy is also a certified yoga instructor? In addition to running a very busy bike shop, you can find Nancy teaching yoga several mornings each week at Flow Midwest Yoga & Meditation. Nancy has graciously agreed to teach a yoga class focused on the unique needs of cyclists.

Cost:  This class is being offered free of charge, but we do ask that you RSVP, as class size is limited.

Why Yoga?

If cycling is your primary sport/hobby, you probably like to find ways to build power, speed and endurance. When you think about yoga, you might consider it an equivalent to stretching, or maybe it’s just something you do to prevent soreness after a ride. And while it would be correct to assume yoga has plenty to offer when it comes to avoiding aching muscles, there’s actually a lot more to it. Some benefits of adopting a regular yoga practice include:

  • Yoga builds on the connection of movement and breath, helping you develop the tools needed to control your breathing and get your heart rate under control. Practicing yoga can ultimately allow you to access more power on the bike.
  • Yoga helps keep your muscles supple and encourages alignment of all the joints in the body, lessening the chance of injury.
  • Increases mindfulness while cycling.

About the Class

This complementary class will be held Saturday afternoon, December 18th, at Flow Midwest Yoga & Meditation (on Iles next to the Office Sports Bar). All SBC members are welcome to join. Non-cycling spouses or family members are also welcome to participate.

What Do I need to Bring?

Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat if you have one (there will be mats to borrow if you don’t have one).

Class Size

There is a 20-person limit to the class. Please RSVP so that we can get a head count.

Election Time - Board Positions Open

Your Springfield Bicycle Club Board consists of 15 annually elected positions. We are seeking club members to fill a few positions for the 2022 calendar year.

If you are interested in contributing ideas, planning & coordinating, and implementing events there is a place for you this year. Requirements include attending a one-and-a-half hour monthly board meeting (held via Zoom) once a month, working with the President in planning and implementing cycling and non-cycling events (socializers, picnics, other gatherings, etc.).

If you would like to find out more about leadership in your Club please email Troy at president@spfldcycling.org or call 217-720-1568.

Once the list of candidates is solidified, the slate of officers will be presented to the Membership. This year's annual membership meeting will be held via Zoom, date to be determined. The Zoom link can be provided for those members who wish to join. Voting for the 2022 Board will take place through Club Express. More details to come.

October 2021 Incentive Report

The Fall Ride and Cookout on October 30th, was voted Ride of the Month.  Starting at Centennial Park, riders chose routes ranging from 23 to 62 miles, using the same roads that were traveled on the Capital City Century.  It was a seasonably chilly fall day, and many riders were cold, especially in the morning.  Nonetheless, it was a fun event, and after the ride there was plenty of food available, from burgers and hot dogs to all kinds of cake and pie.

The Almost Anything  award went to those who volunteered at the sag stop in Pleasant Plains and the post ride food event at Centennial Park.  People prepared food and brought it to the event.   There were many goodies for hungry cyclists to choose from.  Thank you all for your dedication.

The Ride Leader Incentive Award was won by David McDivett for continuing to lead the Monday night rides to Chatham, a long SBC tradition.  David will receive a gift certificate to his favorite bike shop.
