Bicycle Club's 47th Annual Century Heads off to College

Springfield Bicycle Club's Capital City Century (CCC), one of the oldest and most popular recreational bicycle rides in Illinois, is headed off to college!

On Sunday, Sept. 8, the bike club's 47th annual CCC starts at a new location, the Student Union at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The club has partnered with Students Allied for a Greener Earth (SAGE), a UIS student organization, and the university's Green Fee Committee to put on the event. Springfield Clinic is the Platinum sponsor.

The largest bicycle century event in Illinois held outside a major metro area, the CCC draws up to 800 riders annually. This year's CCC features all new routes from 25 to 125 miles in length. Riders will go east to Edinburg and beyond, enjoying low-volume rural roads, many of them new to local cyclists. Mass starts are offered for four different ride distances between 7:00 and 9:30 a.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, riders are welcome to attend a free two-hour guided bicycle tour of historic sites that starts at 1:00 p.m. from the Capitol Complex Visitors Center, 425 S. College Street in Springfield. A packet pickup party will also be held from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Riders can skip the Sunday lines to pick up a CCC packet or register for the event on Saturday. Visit the website below for further details about packet pickup location.

Be an early bird and get the best deal! Early Bird registration online ends on July 31. Advance registration online at a discount continues through Sept. 6. Day of event registration on Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Student Union opens at 6:30 a.m. and shuts down at 9:30 a.m.

One free event t-shirt is included with every individual registration and two with every family registration for those who register online through August 25.  Additional t-shirts may be purchased online through that date, when the  free t-shirt offer expires.  T-shirts ordered online by Aug. 25 are guaranteed for CCC day of event pickup. Presently, there are no plans to sell T-shirts the day of event (Sept. 8).

A Post Pedal'n Party with food and libations from Noon to 5:00 p.m. at the Student Union is included in the cost of every CCC registration, along with one beer ticket. Additional party-only tickets are available for purchase.

CCC proceeds help Springfield Bicycle Club fund local bicycle advocacy, bicycle-friendly activities and charitable donations. This year's CCC -- and its venue -- serve to recognize the 2017 designation by League of American Bicyclists of the University of Illinois at Springfield as a bronze level bicycle friendly university, and the 2018 designation of the City of Springfield as a bronze level bicycle friendly community.
